How To Prevent Dental Health Problems and Expense

Many people underestimate what it takes to keep their dental health intact.  Brushing and flossing actually are enough for some people, but they are in the minority.

There are a few things that can help you to improve your dental health that you may not have thought of.  This is just general information, for specific questions, ask your dental health provider.

People tend to underestimate, or are generally unaware of the importance of the pH balance in their mouths.  This is important for a few reasons.

The bacteria that cause dental disease are generally in favor of an acidic environment.  The more acidic the environment, the more they reproduce.

Because their waste products are also acidic, they help to promote the acidic environment even further.  This in turn leads to the creation of even more acid toxin producing bacteria.

You can see that the cycle goes on and on.  This is one problem.

The other problem is that your teeth themselves need a neutral pH or the minerals that make them strong will be leached out.  This is just like a reaction in basic chemistry.

Therefore, having an acidic mouth causes at least two big problems that oppose maintaining your dental health.   Now, think about the people who sip an acidic beverage all day long.

Have you ever heard of someone saying that they just bit into their lunch and a tooth cracked?   This makes more sense when you think about it.

You can drive the pH balance of your mouth higher by chewing xylitol gum or drinking milk.  There are other things that can help too.  You can always do a ‘before’ and ‘after’ test with pH strips that you may be able to get at your local pharmacy.

This next tool may not effect your pH levels.  However, it can might help you in other ways.

You can add oral irrigation to your daily preventive routine.  The hydrofloss oral irrigator is an excellent choice here.  Many dentists and hygienists recommend them.  This machine helped me to avoid the dreaded ‘deep cleaning’ treatment.  It made my gums healthier and my pocket depths shrink closer to normal levels.

My dentist was visibly shocked when she saw this.   I could see the look on her face.  If more people knew about what the hydro floss could do, I think many people would have healthier teeth and gums.

You can find more dental health tips and general information that can really make a difference to you in the book: What You Should Know about Gum Disease.

Again, what was just said is for general information purposes.  Consult your doctor for specific questions and advice and action steps.

I think you can now begin to understand how to have a better chance to prevent dental health problems and expensive treatments.
