Once the most popular of all diamond cuts but then out of favor for many years, cushion cut diamonds have once again become a fashion sensation around the world. They were the most popular type of diamond in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s but then lost favor with jewelry buyers. In the 21st century, the interest in vintage jewelry has caused resurgence in those looking for antique cushion cut diamond engagement rings.
Cushion cut diamonds are square to rectangular in shape, and they have a uniquely rounded look to them. This roundness makes them resemble a plump pillow or cushion, and that is why they are called “cushion” cuts. They are not quite as sparkly as more modern diamond cuts are, such as the brilliant cut. They do, however, possess more brilliance, which gives them an ethereal glow, seemingly coming from within. The vintage look of these diamonds pairs well with rose gold, and rose colored wedding rings are often paired with cushion cut engagement rings.
A cushion cut diamond ring is more brilliant than other diamond cuts because of the large facets on its surface. These larger facets let in more light with less “bending” of that light, and thus, the stone appears more brilliant. The large facets, however, make it imperative that the diamond be of very high quality so that flaws and color tinges in the diamond will not be apparent. This high quality then in turn causes cushion cut diamonds to be very expensive.
One of the ways you can tell an antique cushion cut ring from a new cushion cut ring is to take a look at how many prongs it has. Older rings usually have at six or so prongs holding the diamond. New cushion cuts will likely only have 4 prongs, because methods and tools today are more advanced than many years ago, allowing the stone to be set securely with fewer prongs. Don’t use this as a definitive way to tell if a ring is antique though – a new ring could be given extra prongs so it appears to be a vintage ring.
