Food allergies are common. They are easy to spot but, to say the least, can be terrorizing. There are different types of food allergies however and not all of them share the typical progression of a food allergy that ends tragically with symptoms such as inability to breathe, breaking out into hives, having your throat swell up, and going into anaphylactic shock. Sure all allergies can develop these fatal symptoms but some types of allergy as not as prominent as you think so you will have to be very careful.
Take for example seafood allergy. We’re not trying to point out here that seafood allergy symptoms are completely pleasant experiences but you should know that they are as subtle as they come. For instance, allergy to shellfish usually starts out as a tingling sensation on your tongue. In a matter of minutes, this tingling sensation will itching and swelling to the tongue, month, throat and teeth.
Skin symptoms are also apparent in shellfish allergy and they start out with blushing, subtle swelling and hives. The eyes will also start becoming red, itching and swelling as the allergy progresses on.
Internal symptoms are things to watch out for during allergy too. While they are not as irritating, these symptoms will cause very severe problems in the end. Shortness of breath or wheezing is yet again a subtle symptom, and so are nausea, bloating, and gas. The rather serious symptoms have something to do with the digestive tract such as diarrhea and vomiting.
These symptoms happen within 6 hours after you eat seafood so if they start way beyond that, then it could have been something else that caused the allergy.
Seafood allergy is easy to avoid. Sometimes, food preparation is the culprit. Make sure that you are preparing your seafood well or go to a restaurant that has been trusted and proven to provide seafood that is clean and fresh. This way, if you are indeed allergic to seafood, you will minimize the risk of developing the more serious symptoms.
