Accessories for Digital DJs

It used to be that DJing was rather simple. Two turntables, some headphones and a bag of records — if you could mix, you could perform. But simplicity has given way to complexity as the era of digital DJing has begun. Now there are countless options and configurations available; this article will explore some necessary accessories for digital DJs.

At the top of the list is (obviously) a computer. The good news is that anything purchased in the last few years is probably sufficient to work with your software and hardware interfaces, but you should definitely cross check your specs against the manufacturer’s recommendations. The most important thing you’ll need is a big hard drive with LOTS of free space and more RAM than you’ll think you need. Always a safe bet for using mixing software.

Second, is of course the best DJ software you can afford. Serato Scratch, Ableton Live and Traktor hold the top three positions, with Virtual DJ being a “working class” alternative. They all have different interfaces and functions, so the best thing to do is watch as many product videos as you can. Above all, talk to other DJs. Ask them what they like about their platform and ask a lot of questions. If they like it, they’ll be sure to tell you why.

Third, a sturdy DJ laptop stand. When you’re looking them over, simulate placing a laptop on it (maybe using heavy books) and then shake the table. See if the stand bounces or shakes at all. A DJ laptop stand may LOOK sturdy but you can only be sure after simulating a lot of vibration coming up through the table.

Lastly – cables. A lot of newbies don’t invest adequately into cables and learn the hard way when the cheap ones short out. The last thing you want to happen in the middle of a show is to hear screeching static coming through your speakers in a club, so spend the extra money and get the best cables you can — you will only be sorry if you didn’t.
